Summer #MilitaryMon Linky!

I think I’m going to call this the exhaustion edition! It isn’t so much the parent-of-newborn lack of sleep…I have three kids under five so…sleep? What’s that?

It is more that I bit off more than I could chew! I set aside time this summer so I could work on some personal projects and then I just took on too many other things. I have a Smart Summer Challenge over on my education blog and I am a community leader over at the Random House Kids Read & Play Summer Fun Community.

In the interest of my sanity, I think I am going to take a break from posting the linky weekly and leave this one open through August. Hopefully this will give me more time to put up some other posts here that I have planned!

A few reminders:

  • Please check out and comment on each others’ posts…that’s what makes people want to come by and leave their links! Comments are catnip to bloggers!
  • Please leave the URL to a SPECIFIC post (or posts…you can add more than one), NOT the main page of your blog.

The linky is up ALL SUMMER! So, stop by anytime!

Having trouble adding your link? Add a comment or tweet @ArmyWivesLives and I will add it for you!

Military Monday Linky – July 11 – Americana Edition

Hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend, celebrating America’s Birthday. Welcome to the July 11 linky!

Right now, I feel just like a slice of apple pie. We enjoyed a weekend out on the North Fork of Long Island with family. My mother-in-law, bless her energy, led the kids in a Fourth of July parade around the neighborhood. The kids rode their trikes and climbed trees and chased fireflies. We held an election and voted for our favorite ice cream flavor. We had a barbecue, finished off with S’mores, and followed by fireworks.

We watched the Fourth of July parade.

We played mini golf. My husband took the two older kids to the beach.

Then, this past weekend, my daughter had her dance recital.

So, it has been a week and a half of wholesome family fun!

Our Troopaws giveaway winner is: Amanda Gardner. I’ve sent you an e-mail so please check and reply!

And don’t forget to check out Troopaws and visit them on Facebook.

Here are a few great posts from last week’s linky:

Trooppaws Giveaway: A Perfect Deployment Friend for Kids

When Trooppaws contacted me to ask if I could share their sweet stuffed animal plush puppies, sewn from authentic military uniform fabric, I immediately asked if I could offer one to a reader, instead.

My husband was deployed while I was pregnant with our first child. And, as difficult as that was, not sharing that special experience, the stress after hearing of our daughter’s heart condition, and the early colicky weeks, I cannot compare it to telling children that their beloved father will be gone for an entire year.

Nothing can take the place of a parent or other loved one in a child’s life but offering a special, personalized gift can help ease the anxiety of separation.

The creator of Troopaws explains her inspiration: “The courage of family members left behind is so admirable that my hope is that loved ones find strength and comfort in this personalized keepsake. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Folds of Honor Foundation.”

From the website: Each Troop Paws measures 14″ in height and is made of authentic military camouflage. They each are adorned with a gro-grain ribbon bow tie and attached to the neck is a metal logo printed dog tag on a key chain. The filling of the Troop Paws are 100% soft poly hypoallergenic. On the right sleeve is a woven American Flag label. The front of the Troop Paws has a clear pocket which is where the photo of your troop goes. They are proudly made in the USA.

If you would like to enter to win a Trooppaws of your choice, you may enter one or more of the following ways:

1. Leave a comment below with a tip or question about easing deployment fears for family members.
2. Like Troopaws on facebook and Army Wives’ Lives on facebook and leave one, additional, separate comment saying that you did.
3. Share the giveaway on the social network of your choosing. Leave one, additional, separate comment saying that you did and input the URL of what you shared as your website.

Rules/Disclosure: I did not accept any fees or products for offering this giveaway. I am simply choosing to support this small business that supports us. Giveaway ends 11:59 PM EST, July 6, 2011. Winner chosen at random. Prize will ship to US postal addresses, only. Please do not put your e-mail address in the body of your comment. If you leave your address only in the e-mail field, I will be able to see it and spammers will not.

Military Mondays – June 20

My husband was actually home for our 10th anniversary. Too bad he spent most of the evening in the ER with our daughter!

We tried to go out for a nice family dinner, silly us! My daughter had been complaining of a stiff neck starting the previous day. Suddenly, at dinner, she just burst out in tears. My mom went home with her and we rushed through dinner. As soon as we got home, she cried that her stomach hurt and threw up.

My husband rushed her to the hospital where they ruled out meningitis and diagnosed “torticollis” (aka “wry neck”).

Of course, in the middle of all this, my telephone stops working so I can’t communicate with my husband. I guess the gremlins don’t only come out during deployments and drills!

Fortunately we’re having a much better Father’s Day weekend!

Here are some of the fun posts people shared last week…please remember to add a link to a SPECIFIC POST in the linky, especially if you want to see your post featured here!

Pay Grade and BAH – Housing in the Military (Ask Molly)

From the Facebook Page:

New army wife planning for the first PCS not knowing where it is! How can I find what housing looks like or how many rooms you get for a family of 4? (E4) thank you to any help!!

Housing availability and quality varies widely from base to base. The best answer I can give is to look at what BAH is supposed to cover. Base housing should, in theory, be at least equivalent to that.

In any given location, BAH depends on the costs in your area (which is an unknown for this reader), your pay grade, and whether or not you have dependents (although the number of dependents does not matter).

According to About.com, rates are determined based on the costs of these types of housing for each pay grade:

BAH Calculations With Dependents

  • E-1 through E-4 – The midpoint between the average rental cost of a 2 bedroom apartment and a 2 bedroom townhouse.
  • E-5 – Average rental cost of a 2 bedroom townhouse.
  • E-6 – Average rental cost of a 3 bedroom townhouse.
  • E-7 – Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 36 percent of the cost difference between a townhouse and three-bedroom home.
  • E-8 -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 75 percent of the cost difference between a townhouse and a three-bedroom home.
  • E-9 – Average rental cost of a three-bedroom home, plus 16 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom and four-bedroom home.
  • W-1 -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 1 percent of the cost difference between a townhouse and a three-bedroom home.
  • W-2 -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 52 percent of the cost difference between a townhouse and a three-bedroom home.
  • W-3 – Average rental cost for a three-bedroom home.
  • W-4 -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom home plus 22 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom home and a four-bedroom home.
  • W-5 -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom home plus 48 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom home and a four-bedroom home.
  • O-1E -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 44 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom townhouse and a three bedroom home.
  • O-2E -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 93 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom townhouse and a three bedroom home.
  • O-3E -Average rental cost for a three-bedroom townhouse plus 26 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom home and a four-bedroom home.
  • O-1 -Average rental cost for a two-bedroom townhouse plus 11 percent of the cost difference between a two-bedroom townhouse and a three-bedroom townhouse.
  • O-2 -Average rental cost for a two-bedroom townhouse plus 98 percent of the cost difference between a two-bedroom townhouse and a three-bedroom townhouse.
  • O-3 -Average rental cost of a three-bedroom townhouse plus 98 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom townhouse and a three-bedroom home.
  • O-4 -Average rental cost of a three-bedroom home plus 58 percent of the cost difference between a three-bedroom home and a four-bedroom home.
  • O-5 through O-7 – Average rental cost of a 4-bedroom home.

Of course, YMMV (your mileage may vary).

More information:

How about you, dear readers? Has BAH been enough to cover these types of housing? How has on-post housing stacked up compared with this chart?

An Interview with Stefanie Adams-Figueroa of My Married Single Life

Stefanie Adams-Figueroa, call her Stef, started her blog, My Married Single Life, as a place to share the trials and tribulations of having a husband who is gone very often.

What topics do you write about on your blog?

Mostly, anything that irritates me! My husband is currently gone to Korea for a year, I quit my job and am eight months pregnant, with an 8 year old and a 3 year old and no family close by so there really isn’t much time or chances to go hang out with friends and vent. So, I started a blog to vent. Sometimes I blog about current happenings like politics and stuff but mainly it’s just whatever I feel I need to get off my chest.

What is a favorite post of yours?

Is there anything worse?” It’s probably my favorite blog because of all the emotions I put into it. It’s a very personal blog and has a lot of my sarcasm and bluntness packed into it.

Tell me a little bit about your military spouse journey.

My husband is in aviation, he’s a UH60 Blackhawk crewchief. he’s active duty, currently serving a one year hardship tour in korea. Has he deployed? Why yes, ma’m. He deployed for the first time in 2003 when our son was 2 weeks old, returned on his 1st birthday, stayed home for 11 months then deployed to Afghanistan for a year. After that we got a nice break of about 1 1/2 years and then he again left for Iraq, while I was pregnant with our second child. He did come home for her big day and left again when she was only 6 days old. That deployment (our 3rd) lasted 14 1/2 months. He’s been in for 10 years now and I’ve been a military spouse for a little over 9 years. We met shortly after he had joined.

What are the challenges of being a military spouse?

What isn’t challenging about being a military spouse? The sad things is, only a miltary spouse is ever gonna be able to relate so I think the hardest part is to listen to the crap “outsiders” tell you. Like “how you knew what you were getting in to when you married a solider”. Or when you listen to your girlfriends whine and complain about their husband having to work on the weekend… you have to bite your tongue A LOT. And of course if you can’t be faithful it’s clearly not the right “job” for you. I do consider being a military spouse a job, a hard one at that. It’s hard to have your own career when you have to move every 2-3 years due to your husband having to PCS. It’s hard to keep things running at home while he’s deployed, drying your kids’ tears, being mom and dad all at together. A friend of mine has this motto “embrace the suck” and I think really THAT kinda hits the nail on the head…you gotta be able to embrace the suck.

What are the best parts of being a military spouse?

The best part are homecomings when you have butterflies in your stomach and you are reminded WHY you’re doing this! And when people actually take the time out of their busy days to THANK YOU and tell you they appreciate your sacrifice–not just the soldiers’, even though that alone brings me to tears. t is one of the greatest feelings in the world when people tell me they are grateful there’s women like me who basically put their own lives on hold to support their soldier! The pride the job brings with it. That’s the best part.

What is the most interesting, unusual, or funny thing that has happened to you as a result of being a military spouse?

Drama, drama, drama and more drama. I don’t think there’s a single military spouse who can say that there’s isn’t a high amount of unneeded drama created by spouses who clearly don’t have anyting better to do than to come up with the most disgusting and pathetic lies and somehow, magically make people believe all of that. Jealousy is such an ugly trait…

To what extent have blogging and social networking affected the military spouse experience?

It has somewhat given me a sense of serenity and accomplishment. People send me messages telling me they love reading my blog, they identify themselves with it. I had people encourage me to write a book, they ask me for advice… it is definitely a good idea to get out there and share your feelings and I encourage every military spouse out there to get connected, don’t keep to yourself, it’ll only make things harder. Just stay away from the drama networks.

If someone you care about was about to marry a military servicemember, what one piece of advice would you give?

Don’t EVER let anyone tell you that they told you so! Don’t EVER listen to what others tell you! Take one day at a time; it’s NOT easy being a military spouse but you have to find your own way, your own place and slowly but steady grow into that new life.

Military Mondays – New Baby Edition!

I hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend with your families. Ours finished with a real bang as we welcomed a new Army Brat to the world. I went into labor late Monday night and Conrad Ulysses joined us on May 31 at 5:18am.  He weighed 9 lbs, 15 oz and measured 22.5 inches.  Conrad’s first name is from my husband’s grandfather, an Army veteran of World War II.

It was a very easy delivery compared to my first two and we left the hospital the next day.  Big sister and brother seem thrilled with their new sibling although they do wish mommy wasn’t napping during the day.

We had a lot of outstanding links last week both from “regulars” and from some other bloggy friends who had relevant posts celebrating Memorial Day. Here are a few I would like to highlight. Please take a moment to stop by, say hi, and leave a comment if you enjoyed the post. Bloggers love comments!
