Just when I thought that I was out…

…they pull me back in.

No, DH has not been called back up from IRR (Individual Ready Reserve). We are still leaving active duty.

However, DH has decided that, in addition to his work as an Assistant District Attorney, he will join the New York National Guard for a few reasons.

In no particular order:

  • He wants to continue serving his nation.
  • They will stabilize him for two years and cut his IRR commitment in half
  • He likes the military

So…now I will find myself in an entirely different sort of military spouse role. Any advice from current or former guard spouses?

    Welcome to the National Guard. Hang on for the ride. The National Guard is just as crazy as the regular Army. This deployment Hubby was called up as a filler and had 5 or 6 weeks to get everyhing ready to go. Come to find out it might not be for as long. That is the plus. National Guard is a whole differnt breed of Soldiers and Spouses. Most Spouses do not want to have anything to do with FRG til a deployment comes up and once it is over everyone goes back to their regular lives. I don’t know if it is that way for full time National Guard guys. I am speaking only from the side of a part timer who has been gone more in the last three yeas than home.

    Welcome to the Guard! The Ol’ Man is Active-Guard Reserve, and he does the National Guard thing full time, so we’re sort of like regular Army but not.

    I’ll tell you this — It’ll be a different experience.

    I’m in the opposite role that you are. My husband has only been National Guard, so I don’t fully understand the Active Duty Wife life. My husband and brother’s engineer brigade was just deployed on the 10th of June. It’s hard when they’re depolyed because you get so used to the 2 days a month and 2 weeks a year thing, that when they get called up it’s something very hard to get used to. I echo Reasa’s comment though, the FRG doesn’t really get active until the soldier’s get deployed. It’s sad, but true. Hope everything goes well for you and your family! All my prayers.
